Launching into the new school year with the SR2S Resource Center

The Alameda County SR2S program has been wildly successful, growing from just two schools in 2006 to serving over 190 schools across all areas of Alameda County. As the program continues to grow, we are launching the new and improved Alameda County SR2S Resource Center. This week at the Safe Routes to School National Conference, Nora Cody from Alameda County SR2S received the 2016 Hubsmith Safe Routes Champion Award for her leadership and commitment to equity in ensuring that kids can walk and bike to school safely. This national award is given to an individual who has demonstrated leadership, commitment, and positive impact on Safe Routes to School in their community. It is named for Deb Hubsmith, founding director of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, who dedicated her life and career to advancing the Safe Routes to School movement. Bike to School Day Registration

Schools in Alameda County interested in participating in Bike to School Day can now register! Get your school rolling by filling out this form by April 7th, 2015! Participating schools will receive giveaways for students who will bike to school. And our Safe Routes to Schools staff will support you in making this a great event!

International Walk & Roll to School Day

Mark your calendar! October 7th 2015 is International Walk & Roll to School Day, when millions of students and their families around the world are encouraged to walk, bike, scooter, skate, or carpool to school. Using active transportation is a great for the environment, and it’s a fun way to build some exercise into your day. In Alameda County, over 130 schools have already registered to participate in the event! Youth Transit Ambassador Pilot Program – Job Announcement

Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) is piloting a peer-to-peer Transit Ambassador program for Bay Area transit systems among students in San Lorenzo and Fremont. This is a paid opportunity for students who know the transit system well, aged 15 to 21, interested in assisting new riders to learn about to: read schedules, plan a trip, how to use transfers, pay the fare, use passes, etc. Transit Ambassadors offer assurance, experience, information and a friendly face to passengers. It’s that time of the year again, when every participating classroom or school has the chance to win a one-of-a-kind Golden Sneaker Trophy. Today, the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools staff got together to finish these glimmering trophies in time for the March festivity. After getting up early and finishing over 100 trophies, I caught up with Terry Farias, a Site Coordinator who has made trophies for three years to learn the steps involved. “There are a few different phases. On Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 10 am to 4 pm, join students from around the San Francisco Bay Area to discuss transportation issues, learn how their decisions can impact climate change, and share ways of encouraging others to walk, bike, take transit, or carpool to school.
