Hand Tally Season is Here

This month, SR2S has been working hard to collect hand tallies from school participants and the responses have gradually rolled in. We are pleased to report that many schools have been helping to collect this valuable data that will certainly improve Safe Routes to Schools program delivery. Site Coordinators and other staff have been helping too. As a staff member who has been assisting schools needing assistance with hand tallies, I enjoy the time I get to spend in classrooms. The Numbers are in for International Walk & Roll to School Day!

More than 120 schools across Alameda County have been celebrating International Walk & Roll to School Day throughout the month of October. Of the students tallied, a whopping 80% arrived at school via green modes: walking, biking, scooting, skateboarding, carpooling, or taking the bus! That translates to over 16,400 students walking or rolling and another 3,600 carpooling or taking transit! Keep the momentum going by preparing for the next two Countywide events – the Golden Sneaker Contest (March 2-13, 2015) and Bike to School Day (May 14, 2015)! Over 80 schools have already registered!

IWR2SD is Finally Here!

Today, hundreds of students walked & rolled to school to celebrate International Walk & Roll to School Day 2014. Many will be marking up mode charts to indicate which mode they took to get to school and getting fun incentive items for their participation in the program. About 150 students and parents participated in a Walking School Bus at Achieve Academy in Oakland (pictured). And new bike racks were put to good use at Frederiksen Elementary School in Dublin where the Assistant Principal Mognaga saw a record-number of parked bicycles. SR2S Schools Receive New Bike Racks!

In celebration of WALKtober, Alameda County SR2S program is awarding four participating schools with brand new bike racks this week! The schools receiving racks include: Frederiksen Elementary School (Dublin), Nea Community Learning Center School (Alameda), Oliveira Elementary School (Fremont) and San Lorenzo High School. These rack awards are based demonstrated need and SR2S program performance. We are jazzed to see these racks delivered to schools in time for International Walk & Roll to School Day. Alameda County is Preparing for Another Successful IW2SD

Alameda County’s schools are gearing up for another International Walk and Roll to School Day event this October. Last week, Tess Lengyel, from ACTC, spoke with Roberta Gonzales on our local news station, KPIX, about the benefits of Safe Routes to Schools. There are 225,000 students enrolled in k-12 schools in Alameda County and over 100 schools participating in SR2S this year. Students are encouraged to walk, bike, roll or carpool to school with their parents, friends or classmates to get to school. Record-setting 5,000 Students Buckle their Helmets and Pedal to School

The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program celebrated its most successful Bike to School Day to date on May 8th, thanks to dedicated students, parents, school champions, and staff! Ridership more than doubled from 2013, with 5,000 students gearing up and biking to school this year. The number of schools participating has also grown substantially from 10 in 2011, the first year the program joined in with Bike to Work Day, to 90 schools in 2014. Some schools even hosted a Bike to Work Day Energizer Station as part of their event. We hope this was only the beginning…

Record Participation Expected for Bike to School Day: Thursday, May 8, 2014

Alameda County has celebrated Bike to Work Day for 20 years. Three years ago, Alameda County’s Safe Routes to Schools program joined in with Bike to Work Day to promote healthy activities for kids. Bike to School Day is part of Alameda County’s Safe Routes to Schools program, a countywide collaboration that promotes safe walking and biking to school. 90 Alameda County SR2S schools are participating in this year’s Bike to School Day, a huge increase over last year. As the school year comes to a close (and with Bike to School Day coming up in the first week of May!) we here at Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools are turning our eyes to the coming school year. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce we’re now accepting program applications for the 2014-2015 school year.
