Comprehensive Program & Technical Assistance Schools
Comprehensive Program Schools and Technical Assistance Schools
Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools offers two tiers of support to schools. Each year the program, based on the scoring of applications, accepts a limited number of schools into our comprehensive program. Schools not accepted into the comprehensive program are offered technical assistance support.
Comprehensive Program
Schools in our comprehensive program identify a school champion, usually a parent volunteer or a staff member, who will take the lead in organizing events and activities at the school. Safe Routes to Schools assigns a site coordinator to training the champion, reaching out to the school community, organizing events, and guiding schools through the program.
Comprehensive program schools also receive all materials and incentives free of charge, are expected to organize three major events per year and are encouraged to hold monthly walk and roll to school days. Comprehensive program schools agree to conduct student hand tallies surveys each fall and parent surveys each spring. In addition, schools in the comprehensive program are eligible to request program elements such as bike rodeos, our educational assembly show, walking school bus trainings, Bike Mobile visits, materials, and more.
Technical Assistance Program
Schools not in the comprehensive program are still eligible to request technical assistance from the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program. Technical assistance schools receive limited coaching via telephone or online, are welcome to participate in task force meetings in their areas, and can take advantage of all of our website resources and materials. Many of our events can be organized by following instructions or downloading materials from our website. Technical assistance schools do not receive incentives and materials, but some schools are able to provide these materials through PTA, city, or district resources. Schools in the technical assistance program are not eligible for bike rodeos, our educational assembly show, or school site specific trainings. We encourage all schools to promote walking, bicycling, transit and carpooling and our staff is available to help brainstorm ideas with you.
